MTR.2011.2 Mountaineers Film Collection, Miscellaneous Screened Films

These films have been viewed once by the Mountaineers History Committee to inspect them. The following notes are sketchy.

1930s

Glaciers: A Science Picture - 16mm, B&W, silent, 3+ min.

This short, undated film (circa 1930) shows glacier features in the Mont Blanc range with English titles introducing each feature. The titles are displayed rather quickly.

Skiing (Strangers) - 16mm, B&W, silent, about 10 min.

This film depicts skiers on Dollar Mountain in Sun Valley, probably in the 1930s. A mix of skills are shown. At least one skier is probably an instructor (not Otto Lang). There are scenes of the Sun Valley lodge and people playing around a swimming pool. The exposures are variable and the camera is somewhat shaky, not professional quality. Near the end are color shots of Sun Valley lodge, people, a train, and then some miscellaneous home movies.

H.V. Strandberg untitled ("Develop before Jun 1939") - 16mm, about 1 min.

This is a tiny reel in a yellow Kodachrome box. It contains footage of the Kalakala ferry on Puget Sound and (probably) the Mountaineers rhododendron reserve. (I didn't actually project this film, but looked at it through a lupe.)

1950s

Snow Climbing Technique 1957-58 - 16mm, color, silent, about 10 min.

This instructional film depicts step kicking, ice axe technique, self-arrest by individuals and groups, roped self-arrest, boot-axe belay, and bollards. The film is dirty in places.
