Mountaineers Library Shelf Space

Here is an estimate of shelf space for books in the Mountaineers Library and Archives as of April 4, 2017. This is an inventory of total space, whether currently empty or not.

RoomCabinet GroupCabinet IDsNumber of CabinetsShelves per CabinetShelf Length (inches)Total Shelf Space (inches)Comments
Summit RoomLockable cabinetsW1T, W1B thru W8T, W8B (top and bottom cabinets)162 or 3471504

These cabinets are of an awkward size. They can accommodate three shelves only for rather small books (such as standard Mountaineer guidebooks). When configured for larger books (two main shelves) each cabinet either has a lot of wasted space, or a very short (third) bottom shelf that can only store books laid flat.

(Trivia: 'W' stands for "west" because the Summit Room is west of the Archives Room.)

Archives RoomDouble-sided "center" cabinetsC1N, C1S (top and bottom) through C3N, C3S122 or 3471128

For this inventory, each side of a double-sided unit is counted as a separate cabinet.

These cabinets accommodate lockable glass doors, which currently are not installed. At present, the doors are in storage in the Magnuson Park program center basement.

These cabinets are of the same awkward size as the ones in the Summit Room

Archives Room"Top" cabinetsT1N, T1S through T5N, T5S, plus TE11323759These cabinets are stacked on top of the double-sized 'C' cabinets in the Archives Room.
Archives RoomSouth cabinetsS5 through S84635840Each cabinet top could potentially be used to store more books, adding another shelf.

Shelf space for the W and C cabinets is currently figured assuming two shelves per cabinet. Currently the top of the S cabinets is not counted in space estimates.

Using these estimates, we currently have 4231 inches (352.5 feet) of bookshelf space in the Mountaineers Archives and Summit Room.
