MTR.2025.13 Kinzebach Pic-Tour Guide Maps

Mountaineers catalog number: MTR.2025.13

Born in 1915, Robert M. Kinzebach became an avid hiker during high school in Wenatchee. He later served as chief meteorologist at McChord Air Force Base, with the rank of Colonel. He started a map business in the 1970s and continued to publish and sell maps through the 1990s. The business grew through word of mouth and exposure in Pack & Paddle and Signpost magazines and the Wenatchee World newspaper.

In the 1990s Kinzebach self-published an 8-1/2 x 11” spiral-bound paperback book titled Exploring the Roads and Trails of the Cascades and Olympics of Washington State from age 17 to 75+ (KM01, 90pp, included in this collection). The book contains stories from Kinzebach’s life, photocopies of pictures, published articles, essays, and weather forecasting tips. According to the book, Kinzebach’s Pic-Tour Guide Maps were available for sale by mail order only.

Following Kinzebach’s death in 1996, his map collection was donated to Scouts. The maps lingered in storage until 2016, when Carl Mealy contacted The Mountaineers about the collection. According to Mealy, the collection included copies of about two-thirds of the items originally published. Monty VanderBilt accepted the collection and it was placed into storage in the map case in the library at the Mountaineers Program Center in Seattle. The collection consists of two copies of each available map. Excess copies were discarded. Maps that were unfolded when donated were stored that way in the map case.

An inventory created by Monty VanderBilt of the Mountaineers History Committee was scanned to a PDF file and saved here:

We have paper copies of every map in the inventory except KA01 and KA10 which are noted in the inventory as “digital only.” Monty VanderBilt recalls that he borrowed those maps to scan them. All maps scanned by Monty can be found here: Custom Maps
